ECHO approach

ECHO Approach
For further information, you can consult the record Psychotherapy . You will find an overview of many psychotherapeutic approaches - including a painting guide to help you choose the most appropriate - and a presentation on the success factors of therapy. ECHO's approach, as well as several other techniques, is part of the mind-body approaches . A complete record is dedicated to these approaches.

Presentation
ECHO's approach is aimed at people with physical illness or psychological. It aims to remove blockages that impede natural life processes normally responsible for maintaining the health and well-being. It does not directly attack the symptoms of the disease, which are considered external manifestations of an imbalance inside. Rather, it seeks to intervene in natural processes which they could indirectly but concretely contribute to healing. Practitioners use the expressions "ECHO approach" or "method ECHO," and sometimes "method ECHO".

Originally: hospital

ECHO must be method to D r Jean-Charles Crombez - physician, psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and psychosomatic - a member of the consultation-liaison service of the Centre hospitalier de l'Universite de Montreal (CHUM-Hôpital Notre-Dame), and multidisciplinary team of clinical research. If its formulation since the early 1980s, the method has its roots in the youth researcher. His attendance mime and his attraction to poetry, as well as workshops on the therapeutic relationship he organized for physicians and nurses of the hospital have contributed to the process of D r Crombez. He has written extensively on the ECHO method (see Books, etc..), And the method continues to evolve thanks to the observations of the team that is responsible for teaching.

The fact that the method is developed in the context of a service of a large modern hospital says it is not designed as opposed to conventional methods of treatment, but to coexist with them. Its general objectives are to:

- promote health and well-being of the person;
- allow the relief of suffering;
- support medical practice.

"The concepts and practices we use already exist, in part, different approaches known here or elsewhere, now or in the past. The interest was to find the intelligence of the group consistently, give them a shape corresponding to our time and in our Western culture, open to thought and humanism, "says Dr Crombez.

The name ECHO, on the one hand, refers to our intimate processes: the person is a being of "internal echoes" of sorts - thoughts, ideas, vibrations, resonances with the outside. In this context, the intention of this approach is to enliven dimension of the person and allow him to "come echoing" with itself. On the other hand, the letters of the word represent the four dimensions of the approach:

- the E interior space, that is to say the practice of the art of being present to oneself;
- the C ourant, or the fact of the return movement where everything seemed frozen;
- the H ARMONISATION, or the ability to play with obstacles;
- the O Oeuvre, or the ability to imagine and create new.

The healing
"The healing power belongs neither physicians nor God, nor gurus, but the person itself", supports the instigator of the method, the Dr Jean-Charles Crombez.

ECHO offers the method to create conditions conducive to restoring the body, with its own "inner intelligence," the ability to do its healing work efficiently.

The process of healing is to create an environment that encourages self-development of the natural healing mechanisms - in other words, cause the placebo effect without pill or placebo.

ECHO method can operate changes in the inner reality of the person for cause results in its external reality, whether physical , behavioral or mental . The approach is essentially non-directive, which distinguishes it from most other treatments and therapies - except perhaps the abandonment body also track non-intervention.

To become familiar with the approach, it must follow that learning can be compared to driving lessons: after a period of guided practice with instructors or instructors, the person may continue to herself. It will then remain in a state of self-presence with the tools it has acquired: relaxation, visualization, meditation, but also and especially the inner attitude of uncritical. By cultivating this state as permanently as possible, promote the continuous process of healing.

When someone says "I feel bad," an objective want to know what ? Where ? Why ? With ECHO method, it is to explore how . How is it that I, I feel bad? We are interested in the person who suffers and not what she suffers.

On the basis of the method is the notion that the human body is "one." This means that its physiological, emotional and mental work according to the same dynamic and this dynamic is intelligent. It is clear that the healing process is natural, as evidenced by the cut that heals. The healing as seen by ECHO is to create a "field personal, bodily and psychic" allowing various healing process to update optimally.

To disease, trauma, abuse or a psychological problem, it often happens that the person is in distress. Because it is overwhelmed by stress and anxiety, his natural life processes are reduced or blocked. One of the main objectives of the ECHO method is just to put people at the center of his experience. Events (pain, fear, processing, financial problems arising from illness, etc..) Can then cease to monopolize the central space and become mere "objects" we must take into account - among many others.

Once it is at the center of herself, the person may begin to breathe and to recognize the subjective reality of his illness. She won the perspective and control . It can then explore the relationship it has with its symptoms and difficulties and, if it so wishes, to address the malaise that underlies them. That said, it is not psychotherapy, but this can be performed in parallel.

The process of healing possess four fundamental characteristics, and it is they who determine the interventions that approach ECHO.

- Because the process is natural , it is necessary to eliminate obstacles to free expression and not to impose specific direction (direct correspond to introduce a stick in delicate workings).
- Because the process is complex , it is necessary to enable each element to manifest subjective (emotions, thoughts, sensations, etc.)..
- Because the process is global , so the mind that the body must be heard.
- Because the process is unique , each person must make his own path and adjust the technique depending on the intelligence of the body.

Despite the use of terms such as "psyche" and "complexity", and even though the theory behind it is developed, the ECHO method is accessible to all because it has very simple in practice.

The effectiveness
ECHO method is known to be useful for people with a problem perceived as the unbearable: cancer , multiple sclerosis , posttraumatic stress disorder, fibromyalgia , grief. But the "seriousness" of the problem is not a criterion, the method is open to all. It is clear that it does not "cure", but it can promote healing.

ECHO Learning takes place in a specific context within which the person must always feel "state power", without having to submit to a technique. "From the moment it is no longer in control, the moment where the goal is to prevail, the moment she is desperate to follow the instructions to achieve a result, the person is already in danger imbalance, which poses a threat to the healing process. "The instructions are considered less important than experience and resulting formulation is surprisingly open. Here is an example:

"You now enter inside job. From this moment until the end of the experiment, all the usual rules and compelling can be ignored if you want. You're forced to anything, unless you wanted.

You do not have to have a goal. But if you want to go in a particular direction, that's okay too.

It is not necessary to want nor understand. But if you find that you have goals, wishes and questions, it is also suitable.

It is possible that things happen and it is possible that nothing happens. Both options are suitable.'How to evaluate the effect of such an approach? "Do not be fooled, says D r Crombez. The power of the natural process of healing is limited and it can not do everything, we all die. "But in case of serious illness, the doctor found that the healing can help reduce symptoms or make them so much more tolerable, and even to regress the disease.

"What happens during the process can hardly be explained. Phenomena are different, have no logical connection with the symptoms presented, addressing the various spheres of reality: physical, perceptual, emotional. Most of the time, people find it hard to explain what happens in ECHO, even if they are convinced that something is happening. Changes occur, some were desired, others were not provided. These changes are global, progressive, ultimately subtle.'

In his preface to the person in ECHO , the Jungian analyst Guy Corneau wrote: "Jean-Charles Crombez suggests that we use our talents to stimulate this process spontaneous [healing] lest our silence make rapid response that the person trying to tell us through the complexity.

In practice
The practice of ECHO method requires a learning period of fifteen hours, delivered to groups of 4-15 people. Learning through individual meetings is possible in the private sector, according to an hourly rate.

Learning method to ECHO are offered according to demand in Quebec, France, Belgium and some other countries. For more details, see the website of the approach.

During meetings, people choose a comfortable position, sitting or lying, to listen to the instructions of the exercises. They consist mainly paying attention to what is happening in itself (sensations, images, thoughts, emotions) suggestions from facilitators. Exercise, for example, proposes to stage various parts of the body (brain, skin, etc.)., Examine and give rise to reactions without ever suggesting interpretation. A period of time is expected to trade. Throughout the meetings, it gradually deepens personal experiences by the participants, if they wish.

Dating refresh
To promote regular and long-term approach ECHO, monthly meetings are open to refresh Montreal, for all those who completed the training.

Vocational training
Training approach addresses ECHO health professionals (nurses, therapists, psychotherapists, etc.). Wishing to integrate this component to their regular practice or conduct an apprenticeship program. It includes basic training, several meetings with a trainer, structured training, and directed readings courses and clinical supervision.
